As I have said before, we do things a bit differently in the Florida Keys, and we’re proud of it. Sunday, May 13th, is Mother’s Day. Sure, we have our fair share of incredible Sunday brunches at top notch restaurants with oceanside views, but we also have other ways to celebrate mom. Tournament fishing is big around here, and many moms love to get out and experience the thrill of deep sea fishing. So, what else do you do to say “Thank You” to mom? You put on a Fishing Tournament, of course!
Of course, I am talking about the 12th Annual Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament. All weekend long, from May 12th-13th, anglers will compete to reel in the biggest dolphin (of the fish variety), and help support an incredible community resource, Habitat for Humanity. Moms, aunts, sisters, and grandmas can enter into the Lady Angler category for cash prizes of their own, all while “Fishing for a Cause.”
Through events like the Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament, Habitat for Humanity is able to complete new homes for those in great need of a place to live. Last year, 4 new Habitat homes were built around the Middle Keys. It takes a village to make programs such as this work, and events like the fishing tournament are a fun and beneficial way to show support. If you’re not up for the fishing, there are still other ways you can help; all community-based organizations need volunteers to help at events like the tournament, as well as with hands-on, home building, and more.
Mother’s Day is a day for family. Living in a community where families are supported makes for a happier place to be. Here in the Florida Keys, attaining a sense of happiness is top of the list for our way of life. When we can bring together family, support, and happiness, it’s a great day. The Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament is just such an opportunity. If you can, I encourage to check it out.
