The Key West Fishing Tournament

Taking place from April through November is the 51st Key West Fishing Tournament (KWFT). Throughout the duration of this eight-month competition, resident anglers and visitors alike are encouraged to log their catches free of charge at one of the tournament’s 17 participating weigh stations to qualify. Weighing in a catch comes with a certificate noting the catch and a chance to win prizes.

Founded in 1965, the Key West Fishing Tournament has promoted sport fishing, and has drawn thousands of anglers to the area to participate in this fun recreational event. After the tournament concludes on November 30th, the awards banquet will honor Division Leaders, Heaviest Fish in each qualifying species, Most Releases, as well as awards for juniors and pee-wees. The awards ceremony takes place in January.

Fishing-enthusiasts of all ages are welcome to join the tournament. There are prizes for the men’s, women’s, juniors, and pee-wee classes. More than 30 species of fish qualify for weigh-in and entry. All fish entered into the tournament must have been caught in the Florida Keys.

The goal of the KWFT is to stimulate sport fishing in Key West, and the release of game fish is highly encouraged for the preservation of the marine environment.

The line classifications range from 8lb to unlimited, with no restrictions on rods, reels, bait, or lures. Entries are classified via line test.

Come and enjoy the great outdoors and take in the beauty that Key West has to offer. The KWFT is a fun, environmentally-stimulating event for the whole family to enjoy. June is the perfect time of the year to take some leisure time and go fishing.
